The Canadian Stalingrad

During the brutal urban combat of WWII’s Battle of Ortona, Canadian soldiers and Italian civilians forge moments of humanity in a city torn apart by war.

The Canadian Stalingrad uncovers the untold story of one of WWII’s fiercest and most
pivotal battles. In December 1943, Canadian forces faced devastating urban warfare against entrenched German troops in the small Italian town of Ortona. Known as “Bloody December,” this grueling fight claimed countless lives, leaving the city in ruins and its people scarred.

Through intimate testimonies from Canadian veterans and Italian survivors, the film captures the humanity amid the horror. Moments like the heartwarming Christmas meal shared by weary soldiers in the Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli starkly contrast with the relentless street-to-street combat that earned the battle its infamous nickname.

Blending archival footage, personal stories, and dramatic reenactments, Ortona: The Canadian Stalingrad explores themes of sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.
